Frequently Asked Questions
What is your procedure for inclement weather and closing?
Cranton Thomes Day School observes the right to close due to inclement weather as needed. We will give you a two-hour notice for any early closures. It is expected that you will pick your child up at or before the designated closure time. We will communicate with staff via our APP, PROCARE or staff text group. We will try to have a decision made by 6pm the night prior but may make the decision by 5am day of.
The center has a generator that runs automatically when/if we lose power. If the generator is to not work we cannot remain open for longer than 2 hours with no power. In the case the generator stops working we will contact all parents by phone. You will need to get your child in a timely manner.
Do you offer a yearly school calendar?
Every January we provide a yearly calendar with all the scheduled closures as stated in the signed contract, or you will be given one upon enrollment of your child(ren). The calendar is subject to change based on staffing, weather and unforeseen circumstances.
Do you supply any food?
We provide all food needed daily for children over the age of one. Breakfast, morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack in a menu planned a week in advance. If your child has dietary needs please speak with your child’s teacher to find the best way to have their needs met, this may include bringing in food from home. For children under the age of one parents are responsible for all food and bottles.
Do you accept any state or financial assistance towards payment of child care?
Yes, we accept subsidy payments through the Maine State Child Care Affordability Program (CCAP) and we are happy to accept payments from families’ individual employment-based childcare reimbursement programs when applicable.
Does my child need to be toilet trained to be enrolled in your preschool or pre-k program?
Children do not have to be toilet trained by any specific age to attend Cranton Thomes Day School. We will work with your child at their pace to become more comfortable and familiarize them with the toileting process. We will take a child lead approach to the toileting process.
Toilet training and accidents will be handled in a positive way. No child will be punished or shamed for soiling, wetting or not using the toilet.
We do not allow food of any kind as a reward for toileting, if you are looking to implement some type of toilet learning system with your child please reach out to their teacher to facilitate this but unless specified in an IEP no individual reward systems will be used.
Are we responsible for paying for days that our child(ren) do not attend due to sickness, vacation or closures due to weather?
In the contract, you will see that the parent(s) will understand that tuition is payable even if the child is absent as the contracted rate has been lowered to adjust for allowable sick days, vacation days, inclement weather and legal holidays.
Does the center follow a curriculum?
All curriculum is play based and adjusted to meet the needs of the individual children in the classroom on any given day. Each classroom’s day to day may vary but will typically follow the same generic schedule which will be posted in each classroom as well as in the parent handbook.
The entire center will follow the same curriculum themes on a week to week basis. Each classroom will breakdown the theme so that all activities are developmentally appropriate per the age group and able to individually focus on the skills and abilities of each child in the classroom.
